Another sleepless night. Running into work with my zipper undone and coffee stains on my white shirt. I stopped at my office door and couldn't see my computer because all my paperwork from the previous day. I wanted to turn around and run.
Where would I even go? Back home? Would I go get my kid first? Wait, that would be a waste of gas... then I would feel guilty. I may as well stay.
I was overwhelmed.
Tips for a Minimalistic Workplace
I hate walking into my office and seeing stacks of paper and the lingering work from days before. Reality check? YES :( I had to do something to find a LITTLE PEACE during those 9 hour days.
1. ONE inbox. I had a 4 tier inbox because I thought that was getting my life "organized" but instead it just spread it out and kept me from actually completing all my task. I would move it from one to the next and make it appear thinner. CLEAN IT OUT, SHRED those papers. I tried MANY shredders and ended up BURNING the motor up. I finally decided on the Amazon Basics shredder and it has lasted two years. It is NOT the cutest or smallest but I had a massive paper issue.
2. Clean out that junk drawer. No, you aren't going to need that note that John gave you last year in the break room. Yes, you may need that phone charger but why don't you take it home until the other one breaks? Napkins.. Really? When is the last time you used that random toothbrush you got from the dentist office? How many pens did you find? Oh, that reminds me.. I found 7 year pen and YES it does last 7 years #7yearpen #challengeaccepted #noexcuses #sustainableproducts #sustainability . They have many prints <3
3. Clean out your virtual inbox. Most emails have a "clean up" auto function. I am so guilty of this. I am terrified to delete emails. My secret- I create folders and hide them so they don't clutter my current inbox. #accountant I use unroll.me app (It's Free) for my personal emails and it's a lifesaver and gives me the option to automatically unenroll all those accidental subscription emails. *I am not a rep for them and don't get into tech reviews so ask your other friends about security for this app*
4. Digitize Old Files. Do you have a scanner in the copy room? Utilize it. Read your Federal and State compliance laws and they probably don't require all those PAPER copies you have been holding onto -that your bank and software keeps. This isn't 1990 <3.
Get with it. 50% of business waste is PAPER. Pull a few Google Statics and roll with it, Boss. I love the software BlackBlaze. #Blackblaze Free Trial
If you're working from home - Invest in a Desktop Scanner ( My fav is Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500 ).
5. Opt. for a laptop. Yes, I said it. #ditchthedesktop #befree Laptops take up less space, less power, fewer cables. I still use my portable monitor with my laptop. I also use my docking station at home when working on projects. #honesty. This is what works for me right now. I am still on my minimalist journey too. I believe in investing in ourselves and having the tools we need to produce a product in the most efficient way.
